Conservation Newsletter

Issue 1 | August 2024

As we approach the end of summer and harvest nears, it’s the perfect time to discuss the benefits of fall cover crops with our growers. County Soil & Water Conservation Districts offer cost-share opportunities for cover crops, reduced tillage, nutrient management, and soil health. From Winter Cereal Rye for suppressing weeds and adding biomass, to Crimson Clover for nitrogen fixation, options like Turnips, Winter Camelina, Kale, and Radish provide diverse benefits suited to various needs. Post-harvest seeding using a planter or drill between September and November offers an efficient option, especially for those new to cover crops or managing large acreage. Listed below are the recommended rates for the fall cover crops in Minnesota.

Kale: 3-10 lbs/acre

  • Breaks up soil compaction

Turnip: 1-5 lbs/acre

  • Late winter grazing

Radish: 1-10 lbs/acre
